Although it does not have to be a symptom of anything serious, it will always be advisable to go to the gynecologist if we have vaginal itching in order to obtain an early diagnosis in case of complications.

Most women experience, at least once in their life, an uncomfortable sensation of vaginal irritation and itching that lasts for several days.

It is a symptom related to infections and gynecological diseases that, although rarely serious, requires attention and care.

Although it appears sporadically and does not always require medical treatment, it is advisable to monitor it to determine if it may present other complications.

For this reason, it is important to know what its causes may be and when it is better to go to the gynecologist to give it adequate treatment.

Taking into account that many do not know why, in the following space we want to share in detail 5 of the main causes of vaginal itching.

Get to know them!

1. Vulvitis or irritation of the vulva.

Vulvitis or irritation of the vulva is the most common cause of vaginal itching. It is produced by the alteration of the pH that the area suffers due to the use of irritating products such as soaps and gels.

The skin in this area is too sensitive and tends to suffer alterations when there are external agents that alter the activity of the healthy bacteria that protect it.

For this reason, it also develops when underwear retains moisture or by not changing quickly from sweaty gym clothes.

Tips:

  • To control itching, rinse the outer parts of the vagina with a solution of apple cider vinegar and warm water.
  • Stop using irritants and replace them with products of natural origin.

2. Yeast infections.

The vaginal area is a part susceptible to the overgrowth of fungi or yeasts such as Candida Albicans.

These microorganisms, which generally inhabit the area, manage to grow excessively due to an alteration of the vaginal flora.

This type of infection can be accompanied by thick and abundant vaginal discharge,  burning when urinating, and a strong odor that is easily perceived.

Its appearance is related to the use of irritating products, sudden hormonal changes and some nutritional deficiencies.

Tips:

  • Increase the consumption of probiotics to promote the regulation of the pH of the vaginal flora.
  • Take a sitz bath with a solution of water and essential tea tree oil.

3. Skin diseases and vaginal itching.

Skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema, may be the reason why the intimate area itches. Although they are less common than infections, they usually affect those with a history of the disease.

They usually involve other areas of the body, such as the face or scalp, manifesting as redness, rashes, and irritation.

To treat it, it is important to consult a gynecologist, since special treatment is required to reduce its symptoms in the vaginal area.

Tips:

  • Apply a mild moisturizer to decrease psoriasis on the vagina.
  • Use low-resistance topical corticosteroids, under medical supervision.

4. Sexually transmitted diseases

Many fear that the cause of vaginal itching is asexually transmitted disease (STD). However, it should not be overlooked that these can also be triggers.

Although the cases are small, it is worth requesting a medical check-up when, for any reason, there are suspicions.

Most of the time, diseases in this category are asymptomatic in their initial stages. Therefore, it is essential to attend any signal in a timely manner.

Tips:

  • Get medical tests if you have other symptoms such as excessive vaginal discharge, vulvar irritation, and red warts.
  • The faster you detect these conditions, the better your chances of getting an early diagnosis.

5. Hair removal methods and vaginal itching:

Today there are many hair removal methods to remove unwanted hair that appears on this part of the body.

However, due to the sensitivity of the skin, allergic reactions are common.

The application of depilatory creams, waxes and similar products can be aggressive. You can also have side effects from shaving with machines and blades.

Tips:

  • Use depilatory ointments for the “bikini” area. They are hypoallergenic and prevent skin irritation.
  • Avoid reusing razor blades or machines.
  • When removing hair, be sure to moisturize the skin.

Do you feel an annoying itch in your vaginal area? Is the symptom recurring? If you consider that there are sufficient reasons to consult the gynecologist, request a check-up as soon as possible.
